STUDIED POPULATION: Adults with type 2 diabetes

FDA-APPROVED USE: Type 2 diabetes

A once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It stimulates the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is elevated, suppresses glucagon, slows gastric emptying, and lowers HbA1c. Appetite reduction and weight effects are secondary observations, not primary mechanism.

Appetite regulation

Semaglutide acts on brain pathways involved in appetite, helping reduce cravings and food intake.

Once-weekly dosing

Same time, same day. Start at 0.25 mg, step up every 4 weeks to a 1 mg or 2 mg maintenance dose.

Slowed gastric emptying

Food stays in your stomach longer, helping you feel fuller for longer between meals.

Weight Loss Treatment FAQs

Is Ozempic® approved for weight loss?

No. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with T2D and known heart disease. Some clinicians prescribe semaglutide off-label as part of a weight-loss program. Your Maximus clinician will determine whether Ozempic® is appropriate based on your medical history. If you'd prefer FDA-approved semaglutide specifically for weight loss, see Wegovy® Pens — same active ingredient, on-label for chronic weight management.

Ozempic® vs Wegovy®— what's the difference?

Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with T2D and known heart disease, and for chronic kidney disease progression risk reduction in adults with T2D and CKD. Wegovy® is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition, and for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with overweight or obesity and known heart disease. Same molecule, different indications, different dose ladders. The choice depends on your goals, your medical history, and your insurance coverage.

How much weight will I lose on Ozempic®?

Ozempic® has not been studied specifically as a weight-loss medication. In studies of adults with type 2 diabetes designed to measure A1C reduction, average body weight changes ranged from about 7.1 lb to 14.1 lb, though some participants gained weight. Individual results vary and depend on your protocol, dose, diet, and activity. For semaglutide outcomes specifically from weight-loss trials, see Wegovy® Pens.

How is Ozempic® taken?

Once-weekly subcutaneous self-injection on the same day each week. Start at 0.25 mg for 4 weeks (titration), then step up to 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg. Your Maximus clinician will provide instructions and walk you through your first injection.
